Spend a residency in Paris in 2027!

The Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava announces an open call for two artistic or research residencies to take place in 2027 at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris. The call is open to AFAD graduates as well as current doctoral students from a range of disciplines, including fine and applied arts, architecture, design, conservation and restoration, as well as theoretical disciplines. The application deadline is 25 October 2026.

The aim of this residency programme is to support and encourage the professional development of artists and theorists. The programme draws on the life, activities and networks of the Cité internationale des arts and its more than 300 residents from all disciplines, generations and nationalities. It also offers support through regular meetings with professionals working in the field of culture.

 

As part of the residency, we offer:

  • A 3-month artistic or research residency;
  • Meetings with international artists and professionals from the local art scene, as well as visits to cultural sites;
  • The opportunity to participate in the weekly Open Studios programme, during which the general and professional public is invited to visit the studios and view works in progress;
  • The opportunity to work with specific artistic techniques in the technical facilities of the residency centre;
  • A grant of EUR 850/month to cover essential living expenses during each month of the stay at the Cité, provided by AFAD and the project partners;
  • Other fees and costs related to the rental of the studio are also covered by AFAD;
  • A live-in studio in the Marais district of Paris at the Cité internationale des arts – accommodation consisting of one furnished working and living space with Wi-Fi internet access.
  • A presentation of the work and outcomes of the residency at an exhibition at the Medium Gallery in Bratislava;
  • Residents may be accompanied by an adult and/or a child under the age of 10. In such cases, the Cité will require payment of an additional fee. This surcharge is not covered by AFAD.

 

Two 3-month periods are proposed within this open call:

- from the beginning of January to the end of March 2027;

or

- from the beginning of April to the end of June 2027.

If interested, you may indicate your preferred residency period. However, we cannot guarantee that your residency will take place during your preferred period. The selected period is for information purposes only and will not be a decisive factor in the selection process.

 

Selection criteria and selection process:

This open call is intended for AFAD graduates, as well as current AFAD doctoral students of all ages and disciplines: fine arts, applied arts, design, architecture, restoration, as well as theoretical disciplines.

If you are interested in the residency, please submit the following documents in English to by 25 October 2026 (inclusive):

  • Completed application form (available for download on this page);
  • CV (max. 4 pages);
  • A portfolio including at least ten visuals with captions describing the works (max. 5 – 10 pages), possibly including links to video/audio files representing your work (.mp3, .avi);
  • A motivation letter and a description of the project you would like to develop during your residency at the Cité in Paris, as well as the reasons why this residency is important for you and how it will enrich your professional and artistic development (max. 2 – 4 pages);
  • A letter of recommendation highlighting your qualities. The letter must be written by a person who does not work at AFAD. (max. 1 standard page)
  • Artist statement (optional).

 

The selection process is based on the submitted applications and takes place in two rounds. The first round takes place at AFAD and is conducted by a committee composed of AFAD members. The second round takes place at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris.

Important:

In addition to evaluating professional experience, the committee will pay particular attention to the artistic quality of the project, the arguments explaining the added value of a residency in Paris within the framework offered by the Cité internationale des arts, as well as any contacts or partnerships that have already been established or that you plan to establish for the development of the project and preparation of the residency.

Applicants must have a conversational command of at least one of the following foreign languages – English and/or French.

The Cité internationale des arts is an artists' residency centre that brings together cultural professionals in the heart of Paris to work on creative and research projects across all disciplines.

For periods ranging from two months to one year, the Cité provides them with a working environment that encourages creativity and enables them to meet other professionals from different artistic disciplines.
