Sediments of the World

The transgenerational group exhibition Sediments of the World is the first large-scale exhibition project in Slovakia dedicated to the phenomenon of collecting as a creative impulse. Curated by Naďa Kančevová, it introduces almost thirty representatives of our art scene who, among other things, create through collections, collecting, and accumulation in various senses of the word.

Sediments of the World - poster

Why do visual artists collect and preserve various objects in the era of overproduction (of things, information, and cultural content)? What types of items attract them? Where do they find their material? What significance do they assign to it? What stories do they tell through their collections? How do they live with them? How do they work with them? How does collecting reflect in their artistic practice and their thinking about our existence and impermanence? Are their collecting fascinations (snow globes, old family clothing, lost keys, historical photographs, books, old prints, dead insects, discarded furniture, medicine packaging, etc.) an escape from reality, or do they instead highlight, define, and interpret reality anew through the acts of collecting, sorting, and occasional exhibiting?

Each personality featured in the exhibition reveals their own fascinations, obsessions, and inspirations from found remnants of the material and natural world—“sediments” revived in new and often surprising contexts.
