Studio of Glass

The teaching process in the Studio of Glass draws on the knowledge of the history of glass industry, but also reacts on current developments  in applied glass art and design. It is designed to meet individual needs of students. It is flexible, so the students are not limited, but on the contrary, they are encouraged to search for their own artistic style.

During the bachelor´s level of study the students attend frequently consultations with pedagogues who emphasise interconnection of philosophy and technology when completing semestral assignments. The students get familiar – on theoretical and practical level – with all basic glassforming technologies (grinding, melting, glassblowing, metallurgical processing of glass, painting on glass, etc.), and get an overview of history of art and design (primarily history of free and design glass art).

The students learn to design utility glass artifacts, mass-produced artifacts for technology in particular glass factory, architectonic solution of exterior or interior. When working on external projects in glass factories, the communication between the student and experts on glass (production technologist, glass craftsman) is crucial.

When completing assignments of free art, the emphasis is put on individual approach of the students to the assigned topic, on their high level of mental, material and technological openness - the glass as a medium is only one out of a number of possible materials.

The students at the master´s level of study are recommended to continue in free or applied glass art upon consultation with a pedagogue.

Free art – intellectual side of the creation is emphasised

  • openness to various artistic and inartistic influences, artistic strategies and media,
  • the glass as a medium is only one out of a number of possible materials

Applied art – creation of intelligent utility products

  • Projects for specific glass producers with clear design, marketing and bussiness purposes, so the final products can be included in the product portfolio of the glass companies.

The aim of the master´s level of study is to prepare the student for a career of professional visual artist and designer.
