We invite you to the OPEN DOOR DAYS of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, which will take place on Wednesday, October 23 and Thursday, October 24.

Come and see the teaching live, talk to our students, or consult your work with teachers. In addition to guided tours of the school with stops at individual studios, if you are interested in a specific study program, you can also attend separate presentations where you will learn much more about their studies, assignments and student projects.
This year we have prepared an extra day for you! Although we are an art academy, you can also study the theoretical program History and practice of contemporary art at the master's degree, which we would like to present to you. On Wednesday, October 23, we will also focus on the presentation of the teaching of theoretical subjects, which you will be able to visit live, as well as on our doctoral studies. Our doctoral students of various specializations and fields will show you what kind of research and projects they are focusing on.

DETAILED PROGRAM OF THE OPEN DAY ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2024
Focused on presenting the master's program in the History and Practice of Contemporary Art and doctoral research at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (VŠVU). You will have the opportunity to attend theoretical lectures and seminars, learn about the study at the Department of Theory and History of Art.

- Interpretive frameworks of contemporary design I.

- A lecture followed by a seminar intended for students of the master's degree with a focus on Design. In this semester, the subject focuses on the methods of interpretation of the history of design, their nodal points and dominant problems. Students will acquire the ability to orient themselves in the historical context of the formation and development of design, the disposition of critical reflection of significant activities in the history of design.

- Problems of visual media (sculpture - intermedia) I.

- The course focuses on various approaches and themes in contemporary art of sculpture and installation, as well as in the field of new and digital media. Due to the concept of the subject (led by a pair of pedagogues) and its focus for students of intermedia and the department of sculpture and installation, the curriculum is composed on the basic topics of mediality, as well as issues of time, space, projection and other forms of presentation of a work of art. The topics are related to discussions and presentational student works (papers, seminar papers), the reading and analysis of which, as well as the discussion of creative material, is an important part of the subject.

- Students acquire deeper and more systematic knowledge in the chosen field of study (sculpture and intermedia), improve their critical thinking, text interpretation, use of argumentation, asking questions and group discussion.

- Students acquire deeper and more systematic knowledge in the chosen field of study (painting and printmaking). It improves in critical thinking, analysis and interpretation of both the image itself - in dialogue with the medium of painting and graphics, and in the wider context of the history of the 20th and 21st centuries. The content of the subject consists in deepening the skills of own opinions and attitudes in face-to-face and discussion form.

- The aim of the course is to prepare students in the master's degree to successfully pass the final state exam in the theory and history of contemporary art. The goal is to provide students with orientation in the interpretative frameworks of contemporary art, as well as familiarization with exhibition formats, theories and criticism of contemporary art. Acquired skills such as interpretation, critical reflection, argumentation and polemic based on relevant texts are applied in the interpretation of contemporary art within valid discourses.

- Despite the fact that we are an art academy, it is also possible to study at the Department of Theory and History of Art at the master's and doctoral level. Our two-year master's program History and Praxis of the Contemporary Art in a full-time form of study responds to the dynamic transformations and new global challenges facing contemporary art in the 21st century. The program is intended for humanities students who wish to deepen their theoretical and practical skills in broad-spectrum work with contemporary art. The advantage is the presence and the possibility to participate in studio teaching according to one's own interest and focus, directly with the students of art fields.

Laboratory of Performance

- 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. The morning program will be devoted to student projects focused on performative work with the hollow fiber material. The practical part will be led by student Michal Zoller, who will demonstrate how to work with this material and what creative possibilities it offers within the performance.
- 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. In the afternoon there will be a commented screening of the documentary film Paris Is Burning from 1990, directed by Jennie Livingston. The film deals with the New York ballroom scene of the 80s and the themes of identity, culture and social norms.

A unique typography WORKSHOP in your town!
We have prepared for you two hours of smacking letters. You will learn the brief basics of writing based on the chirographic principle. We will use different tools such as brushes and markers of different sizes and tips. So you don't have to wear anything. Capacity is limited! (in the words of ten people)
