  • 1st term (second round:  February 10 – February 11, 2025)
  • 2nd term (second round: February 13 – February 14, 2025)

AFAD determines further conditions for the admission to the individual study programmes in order to ensure that only applicants with necessary skills and potential are admitted. The determined conditions and the method of verification of their compliance must allow to choose applicants who show the highest level of talent, knowledge and skills to study the individual study programmes realized at AFAD.

Admissions committee

The assigned tasks and parts of the entrance examination are evaluated by at least five members of the admissions committee appointed by the Rector from among the university teachers performing a study programme at AFAD with an art-academic title of professor, associate professor or assistant professor. A university teacher teaching within another study programme at AFAD can also become a member of the admissions committee.

The members of the admissions committee evaluate the tasks in both rounds using a point system on a six-point scale (0-5 points) or on an eleven-point scale (0-10 points). Each task (including homework) is scored separately. In the case of the second round with a full-day assignment, the admissions committee can evaluate using a system on an eleven-point scale (0-10 points). The condition for advancing to the second round is to obtain at least 50% of the maximum possible number of points for the tasks of the first round. Depending on the situation (e.g. a small number of applicants), the commission can move the advancement limit to 45% of the points earned.

For detailed specification according to individual study programs see in point 8., "Requirements of individual study programs" point "Further details of individual tasks during the admission procedure".

The applicants who pass to the second round of the admissions procedure are informed as follows:

  • The results of the first round of admission interviews – are published via the website no later than 30 days after the 1st round. At the same time, an invitation to the second round of admission interviews is sent to the advancing applicants by email to the address indicated in the application.

School-wide admissions committee

Admissions committees present the results of the evaluation of both rounds as well as applicants’ art works to the school-wide committee appointed by the AFAD Rector. The members of the school-wide admissions committee may be the AFAD Rector, AFAD Vice-rectors, the head of the AFAD Academic Senate, heads of the AFAD departments, heads of AFAD studios, teachers leading preparatory courses and members of the departments’ admissions committees, while the chairman of the committee is the Vice-Rector for Studies.

The school-wide admissions committee assesses the results of the evaluation and order of the candidates presented by each departmental admissions committee, thus verifying the results of the admissions procedure. The whole school admissions committee has the right to change the order of candidates based on the evaluation of the departmental admissions committee, by open vote which requires a simple majority of the votes of the present members of the school-wide admissions committee.

The school-wide admissions committee has the right to propose to the AFAD Rector to increase or decrease the number of the admitted applicants for individual study programmes, or not to admit any of the applicants due to the low level of their performance. The final decision on the admission or non-admission of the applicant is made by the Rector of the school who considers the proposal of the whole school committee. The final decision is sent to the applicant by the AFAD’s Study office by post no later than 30 days after the end of the admissions procedure (meetings of the school-wide admissions committee are held after the second term).

Decision on the Admission/Non-admission

The applicant, who receives a decision on the non-admission to study, can request the review of the decision. The request must be sent to the AFAD Rector no later than 8 days after the date of the reception of the decision. If the rector does not find any infringement, the request is forwarded to the AFAD Academic Senate. The Senate does not evaluate the quality of works but the procedural side of the proceedings. The decision of the AFAD Academic Senate is final. The reply to the request to review the decision must be sent to the applicant no later than 30 days after the date of the reception of the request to review the decision of non-admission to study at AFAD.

The conditions of admission and the course of the admissions procedure for Bachelor´s degree programs are stated in detail by the Internal Regulation on the Admissions Procedure at AFAD.

Architecture

*Requirements for entrance examination. Home assignments, further details of individual tasks, necessary tools. The requirements are current for the admission procedure at Academic year 2025/2026.

Requirements for the assignments – 1. portfolio + 2. architectural self-portrait. To receive the full possible score, both tasks must be completed, and each is graded separately. They must be clearly distinguishable.

1/2 of the applicant’s portfolio features a wide variety of artistic skills and interests

  • For example: still lives, outdoor spaces, bust, painting, photography, sculpture, design, printmaking...
  • Properly marked authorship and whether the applicant’s work was done under teacher´s guidance (art course, preparatory course, high school and others etc.) or it is a result of the applicant’s individual work

1/2 of the applicant’s portfolio features specific assignments documenting his/her intense interest in architecture

  • drawings and sketches from life – interior, exterior, object
  • analytical drawings revealing thinking about structure, construction, textures, materiality, compositionality, formal procedures and transformations
  • designs of simple architecture, architectural objects, constructions or structures represented in sketches, drawings, technical drawings (floor plans, cross sections, perspectives), spatial representations (perspective, axonometry...), physical models (photo documentation of the result and construction methods), 3D digital models (photo documentation of modelling stages, visualization, defining parametric relationships)

ARCHiTRAIT - architectural self-portrait

  • Create your interpretation of architecture as a portrait (or a portrait as architecture) using any technique. Write an essay to accompany your "Architrait," complementing your visual or spatial expression.

  • WHAT WE EXPECT:

    • Try to merge your traits with architecture—create a self-portrait that creatively captures your character, interests, and physical appearance in the context of architecture.

    • There is no single way to approach this challenge; the solution is in your hands. Don’t be afraid to think about yourself and architecture without limits. If you need guidance, try asking yourself a question that connects you with architecture. For example: What type of architecture best expresses my feelings? What would I look like if I were a building? Which of my characteristics can be expressed through space or another architectural element?

    • A crucial part of the process is the written component. The essay should develop and interpret your visual or model-based work on the architectural portrait. We aim to learn not only about this specific task but also about your broader view of architecture in the context of culture.

  • WHAT NOT TO DO:

    • Do not use artificial intelligence for your work. We require independently completed assignments—do not submit pre-existing work from your portfolio.

  • TECHNIQUE:

    • Graphics, drawing, painting, collage, comic strip, technical drawing, visualization, model photography...

  • FORMAT: We expect two outputs: one visual and one textual:

    • For the visual component, use A3 format. In the case of a three-dimensional piece or model, submit photographic documentation (multiple photos are acceptable).

    • For the text, provide 1,500-1,800 characters in a separate format.

  • We have chosen the "Architrait" instead of a motivational letter because we expect a more original and individualized expression of what interests you about architecture and your relationship to it.

How to submit works:

  • Digital version of homework - portfolio will be uploaded by the applicant after submitting the electronic application and attachments in the period from December 5, 2024 from 12:00 p.m. –  December 12, 2024 until 1:00 p.m. via the website: https://ulozisko.vsvu.sk/; access data and instructions will be sent to the email addresses listed in the application no later than 12 p.m. on December 5, 2024. Topic: "Protest"

Protest is a democratic form of expressing disagreement with the way we are led, with people's statements and actions, with the negative circumstances that affect our lives, and with worldviews that do not resonate with our own. Protest can take the form of both public and individual opposition to someone or something; it can be loud or quiet. It can last for long periods of time, but it can also be quick and immediate. When our goals are achieved, it is an effective protest, but many remain without bringing about change. We are curious to see how you can express this concept visually and what background you bring to it with your work.

You can choose from several art forms to embrace the theme. Choose one and process it according to the given form and extent:

  • 2D/3D graphics, graphic design: Create a series of graphics or a 3D scene (render) or a fictional advertisement or a photocollage.... Surprise us..
  • Architecture, design, public space intervention.: Hand in your sketches and/or your 3D model, perhaps a photo-collage of your design and real space. 3D designs must be rendered into images and/or videos.
  • Virtual and augmented reality. Sketches of the visual appearance accompanied by text description, documentation, screenshots... If you implemented the idea hand in the executable application too.
  • Videogame, interactive environment: You are submitting an Art Design Document and a Game Design Document if it is a proposal. If you implemented the idea, upload the executable application too along with instructions for running the game.
  • Video, animation: Video file, max 3 minutes.
  • Infographics: Static images and/or a PDF presentation and/or interactive online visualization
  • Interactive installation in space: Design elaborated in the form of sketches, or a digital 3D model. Both should be accompanied by a description of the design of the installation and of its interaction with a visitor.
  • … others
  • We invite also other forms and shapes of creative output. Please, contact us for a consultation.
