Annotation

The exhibition project A heroic figure on a pedestal, a marble statue against the background of the sky is a fascinated and updated return to Maya Deren's cult avant-garde film Ritual in Transfigured Time from 1946. In it, Katarína Karafová builds on the tradition of post-conceptualism and the discourse of documentary, while revising the possibilities of recording and their the relationship to what is shown and to the audience. She mixes the unbiased observational approach of the "eye of the camera" with the level of subjective interpretation and, following the example of Maya Deren, imaginatively explores the fragile lines of force of close relationships. The movement performance is a reenactment of the choreographic sequence of the cited film, albeit with altered attributes. Thus, one of the possible keys to grasping the video installation is the necessity of a semantic meta-interpretation of each element of this deconstructed film.
