Annotation:

Atlas of the Garden is an interactive exhibition of Igor Rjabinin’s doctoral project, connecting objects found in the Prüger-Wallner Garden with works from online art collections.

Visitors are invited to walk through the garden, find a small object in their surroundings and bring it into the little house. Once placed in the light box, the system scans the object and compares it with digitised works of art. The result is a new diptych — an encounter between what is physically present here and now, and an image from a cultural heritage collection.

The project is based on the question of what happens to a work of art when it is moved from the gallery into a database. Online collections provide access to a vast number of images, but at the same time they often strip them of context, stories and relationships. Atlas of the Garden explores whether these lost layers can be reactivated — through chance, association, play and the visitor’s personal experience.

The installation also includes a sound layer composed of field recordings from the Prüger-Wallner Garden. Object, image and sound thus meet in a short, open-ended story that does not need to have a single correct answer.

At the top, the text asks: “What happens when a small piece of wood from the garden meets a work of art?” In the centre is a digitally processed image of a curved piece of wood.
