Annotation
The generalizing concept of the symptom became a key that made it possible to interpret the different, yet ultimately similar, experiences of students from both studios. In the humanities context, the concept of the symptom extends beyond its medical definition as a “sign of illness”; in visual art, it appears above all as a sign that represents, suggests, or conceals something. It is also often described as “a silence that speaks”, where the conscious and the unconscious, the individual and the social, meet.
Working on the projects became a form of “remote” dialogue, revealing that despite distance and difference, we are troubled by similar questions and concerns, and that our ways of thinking and perceiving the world have more in common than may seem at first glance.
Three departments collaborated on the project: the Department of Current Art Practices of the Lviv National Academy of Arts, the Studio Photography, Reality, Construction, and the Department of Theory and History of Art at AFAD.
