Annotation

The exhibition presents a curated selection of glass objects created at the XV. International Glass Symposium IGS in Nový Bor, which took place from October 3 to 6, 2024. The tradition of IGS has lasted for more than forty years. From 1982 to 2006, the symposium was organized as a triennial by the Nový Bor company Crystalex. In 2009, the town of Nový Bor took over the role of the main organizer in cooperation with the glass companies of the region and professional schools.

The anniversary XV. symposium was attended by 45 artists or creative duos from 17 countries and all five inhabited continents. Artists, far from only from the glass environment, are selected to ensure that the result is as diverse as possible in terms of geography, gender, age, and creative approach. They have at their disposal the production capacities of local glass companies. These companies, although naturally competitors, are able to come together for the purposes of the symposium, stop production, and invest considerable money, time, and the skills of their employees to provide a creative environment for the artists.

Working in a different environment, in front of an audience, with different technical support and different glass material, moreover, within a time limit of just a few days, is a great challenge for the invited artists. Stepping out of their comfort zone and experimenting outside the "safety" of their own studio is sometimes a struggle, but it often brings unconventional solutions and surprising results.

IGS is a phenomenon – its tradition has lasted for more than forty years. It has been organized every three years despite the dissolution of the original state, the privatization of the original organizer, the coronavirus pandemic, and many other obstacles. Each edition is different, unrepeatable, hectic, and unforgettable. Most of the symposium's program is accessible to the general public. It is an opportunity to see the creation of an original artistic work with your own eyes, to experience the authentic atmosphere in glassworks, and to participate in accompanying events. It is an unrepeatable and hectic time filled with a creative atmosphere. It is a time when there is applause in the glassworks…
