A quarter of a century of creation, long-term teaching and curatorial activity, more than 220 exhibitions and participation in seven symposia at home and abroad, this is the business card of Patrik Illo, head of the GLASS Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava and chief designer of the renowned glass factory RONA in Lednické Rovnie. He will exhibit a rich selection of his work from March 4 to April 30, 2023 at ZOYA GALLERY in Bratislava's Old Town.
The exhibition called PROFILLO – Design & Art presents Patrik Illo in all positions from freelance artist to corporate designer. It maps his creative journey as well as collaboration with well-known Slovak, Czech and Polish glass brands RONA, KROSNO, WRZESNIAK, CRYSTALEX, MOSER or LASVIT, or his own design projects, for example within the ILLOLA studio. For the longest and most intensively, Illo cooperates with the Slovak RONA, for which he has designed a number of aesthetically remarkable and commercially successful designs since 1994. It also organizes international glass symposiums here.
"Patrik Illo is the type of artist who naturally moves across forms. Despite the fact that, especially in the beginning of his work, he used various materials, he concentrated on glass during his twenty-five-year professional career. He works with him naturally both as a designer and as an artist, and he excels in both positions. He can respect the specifics of these disciplines. He does not design art or programmatically create a solitary design, but always creates in the truest sense of the word," says exhibition curator Petr Nový.
A large space is dedicated to Illo's author's work in cross-section from his student years to the present. His early works often combine the ironic melancholy induced by the play with contexts, experienced narratives and the poetics of "laughter through tears". A more or less hidden sexuality is also omnipresent in Illo's art collections, whether in the form of a sigh or an exaggeration. In the case of author's glass work, the fundamental themes for Patrik Illo are the discovery of inner space, the search for technological limits, the aesthetics of "glass not glass" and the contrast of simple shapes and tectonic structures.
"Preparing the balance sheet exhibition was a big challenge for me," Patrik Illo said about the project. "Together with the curator, we worked on its concept for more than a year and were looking for the key to not present my work in a simple chronology, but in such a way that it really maps not only the results of my work, but me and my thinking about it. And I think we found the key", Illo added. Illo collaborated with architect Michal Illo, graphic designer Peter Nosáľ and photographer Lukáš Moravský on the scenography and visuals of the exhibition.
