Magda Stanová is the next artist-in-residence in Paris
From the beginning of April to the end of June Magda Stanová, a graduate of the Photography and New Media program, is spending her artistic-research stay at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris with the support of the AFAD.
Magda Stanová is a multidisciplinary artist with background in new genres and photography. Her research-based practice results in artistic forms like visual essays and lecture shows. She smuggles performative lectures into academic conferences and a drawn theory of photography into photographic festivals. Lookong into cognitive sciences for ideas about creative process and perception of art, she combines them with the experience of an artist. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in the studio of Milota Havránková in the Photography and New Media program (2007).
During her residency, she wants to focus on the creative part and structure of her new artist's book, which will not create theory from an art history perspective that summarizes and describes what has already been created, but from an artist's perspective will focus on the creative process that leads to the creation of a new work. In her book, she addresses the question of the fading experience from artworks, among others: “A repeated joke isn’t funny, but looking at the night sky seems to impress us every time. A metaphor often turns into a cliché, but sometimes it becomes a regular expression. Some experience triggers—poems, gossips, movies, stand-up, discoveries, botanical gardens, artworks—wear off quickly, others slowly, while some might get better and better over time. Are triggers that “always work” fading as well, but so slowly that we die before we notice them fading? Can we foresee at first sight whether an artwork will grow on us? Can genres be distinguished according to the shapes of fade-rate curves?”
Nineteen AFAD graduates from fields such as painting, performance, design and art theory applied for the fifth open call. The commitee at the AFAD (composed of: Barbora Komarová, Miroslava Urbanová, Beata Jablonská, Jozef Eduard Masarik and Lucia G. Stach) selected six candidates for the second round. Subsequently, the committee at Cité (Vincent Gonzalvez – Director of the Residency Department, Souraya Kessaria – Program of Residencies and Partnerships) chose Gabriela Smetanová for the first residency in 2025 and Magda Stanová for the second one from April to June.
The Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava has established a long-term cooperation with the Cité internationale des arts in Paris, within the framework of which it will send twice a year authors from Slovakia working in the fields of visual arts, design, architecture, restoration and art theory. Those who graduated from the AFAD or are currently studying at a doctoral degree can apply for the residency - regardless of field, field of research or age.
Another open call for art and research residencies in Paris will be announced later this year for another two residencies in 2026. Follow us on our social media and website for updates.
