About the Lecture

In the lecture Paper Universe, composed of visual and physical examples of Czechoslovak sci-fi zines, I will focus primarily on their visual aspects and the emergence of fandom. During the 1980s, many amateur sci-fi clubs operated in Czechoslovakia, producing self-published magazines often featuring original covers, typography, and illustrations in their issues or occasional anthologies. The aim of this commented visual presentation is to introduce these fanzines and highlight the anonymous or specific creators of the Czechoslovak fandom who contributed to their artistic design.

The realization of this lecture was supported by a scholarship from the Fund for the Support of Arts (project: 24–341–02050: Images of Unknown Worlds. Science Fiction and the Cosmos in Slovak Illustration and Book Design of the 1960s–1980s).
