Eva Holts: Dia Kinets. Reflecting on the Purpose of Diafilms
The project honors the memory of School No. 18 in Chernihiv, Ukraine, which was destroyed by a Russian missile in March 2022. The project’s curator, Eva Holts, studied there as a child and later discovered numerous old Soviet diafilms scattered in the school’s ruins—some in the hallways, others in the trash. These diafilms contained propaganda about history and Russian literature, as well as educational materials on physics, geography, and biology. Once used for lessons, they lost their original purpose after the school’s destruction. Eva decided to give them to artists for reflection. In response, 20 artists, including Eva herself, created works in various media, such as collages, video art, and installation objects.
The artist talk will focus on the project Dia Kinets, which commemorates the destruction of School No. 18 in Chernihiv by a Russian missile in March 2022. Curator Eva Holts will share the story of the project’s creation, the process of working with Soviet diafilms found in the ruins, and how these artefacts were transformed into art. Attendees will watch a short documentary about the school and the diafilms, followed by a presentation of the artworks created by various artists—collages, video art, and installation objects. The discussion will explore the concepts behind these works and conclude with a Q&A session.
