Works from the AFAD awarded at Graduation Projects 2022

The international competition for design students from the V4 countries – Graduation Projects took place again this year. We are very happy that several bachelor's and diploma works from the AFAD were among the awarded projects, namely by Diana Mrázová, Georgios Somarakis and Viktória Vičíková. Congratulations!

Already for 20 years, Graduation Projects is a review of projects created by graduates of design studies from Central Europe: the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and citizens of these countries who study outside of the territory of the Visegrad Group. Both Bachelor and Master projects can be submitted. The projects are evaluated in two categories: 2D – applied graphic design (including website design, active design, and application design) and 3D – industrial design (including fabric, clothes, glass, and ceramics design).

 

The AFAD was also represented in the jury - Marcel Benčík from the Department of Visual Communication was part of the 2D design category and Marián Laššák from the Department of Design was in the 3D design category.

The author of the project invites visitors to find out how much greenhouse gases they emit into the air. The carbon footprint calculator is available on the project website, where you can learn about your daily and yearly emissions. The calculations are precise and at the same time quick and simple, based on questions about five major factors. Visitors can also see in real-time what their carbon footprint looks like: an inflating balloon visualises the physical volume of greenhouse gases emitted into the air daily by an individual. The installation presents ways in which a person can offset their carbon footprint: special pictograms represent actions, which can be taken to curb climate change.

The lamp is designed in a way that helps in limiting the number of things at home – one object can be used for various purposes. In the first setting, the lamp is great for computer work in the evening – light is reflected by the lampshade surface, which creates soft illumination on the table, free from sharp shadows. The second option is direct source of light in the form of a table lamp. In the third version, a part of its structure is moved by 180 degrees to produce stronger light for darker rooms. In every configuration, the intensity and direction of light can be regulated by moving the lampshade near or away from the lamp.

The goal of the project was to combine new technologies with the analogue essence of printing, while designing experimental forms of letters and typography innovations. The main concept behind the project was to create a portfolio of typefaces inspired by the Wild West style and referring to old printing techniques and wood types used in printing in the past. The design of each character is strictly connected with the process of preparing models for 3D printing. The author uses a variety of PLA materials, which are recyclable, so old types or scraps can be crushed, melted, and reused. Another advantage of the material is its lightness and the fact that it is a much cheaper alternative to wood.
