Congratulations to the winners of the National Design Award 2022 - Communication Design
On October 18, the award ceremony for Slovak communication design took place as part of the National Design Award 2022, which is organized by the Slovak Design Center. We are very happy that our pedagogues, as well as graduates from the Department of Visual Communication, were among the laureates. Congratulations to all awardees and nominees!
In the Student Design category, our recent graduate Kristína Uličná won with her diploma project.
Study of Studies

A publication that offers the reader the opportunity to look into the heads of graphic designers and understand their thinking, how they operate during the creative process and who they are. The book is intended to help students, some of whom do not know what exactly they want to do after their studies, guide their future practice in graphic design. The Study of Studies contains interviews with independent designers, graphic studios and advertising agencies in Slovakia.
In the Book and publication category, our colleagues Palo Bálik and Michal Tornyai were awarded first place for the book collection ExEdícia.

The collection of six books in exclusive cloth binding with embossing for the 30th anniversary of the founding of the KK Bagala publishing house contains a total of 2,376 pages of engaging reading from popular Slovak writers Pavel Rankov, Márius Kopcsay, Viliam Klimáček, Tomáš Horváth, Karol D. Horváth and Balla.
Pedagogue Michal Tornyai also received a special award for design personalities as an Established Designer.
Award for design personalities – Established designer
Michal Tornyai
Slovak graphic designer, font maker, typographer and teacher. He studied at the Josef Vydra School of Applied Arts in Bratislava, at Birkenhead College (1996-1998) in Auckland, New Zealand, and at the Institute of Technology in New Zealand (1998-1999). Between 2000 and 2006, he studied visual communication at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, where he later received a doctorate. For many years he worked in the graphic studio KAT studio and with the Risomat brand (2015 – 2019) popularized the technology of risographic printing among Slovak designers and artists. Since 2016, he has been an assistant professor in the Typo studio at the Department of Visual Communication at the AFAD. In his design practice, he is actively involved in font design, typography, book design, visual identity and logotype creation. He is the chief designer of the civic association Čierne diery, which deals with the promotion of long-overlooked Slovak industrial architecture. For many books that he edited graphically, he created several custom fonts, for example Diery, Socha, Grunt or Hanka. With the publication Čierne diery. Industrial Monuments and Forgotten Places of Slovakia won the Tatra Banka Foundation Award for Art in 2019 and the main prize in the 2020 National Design Award – Communication Design in the Books & Publications category.
