Annotation

If we reverse our perspective, we might look at zoological gardens as traumatic environments not only for animals, but for humans too. They represent a clear-cut hierarchical distinction between humans and their environment and point to the consequences of hunting and putting animals to cages for various utilitarian and anthropocentric purposes. I believe there must have been an uncanny melancholy felt by someone when observing imprisoned predators, idle exotic mammals, disturbed birds and pervasive stress and apathy.

 

The exhibition makes an effort to propose a different perspective on non-human beings, which enables us to communicate with other species as agents, to speculate or to attribute them with legitimacy and leads to subverting colonialist and anthropocentric domination. Concerning the incapability to address climate change, which the author of the exhibition observes as a hyperobject (i.e. an entity evading our understanding as it exists partially outside of our cognitive framework), the exhibition's goal is to decenter human superiority and to seek a room to reflect on interspecies coexistence and sharing.
