Mgr. art Vlasta Žáková ArtD. (b. 1981 in Rožňava)
She is a graduate of the Department of Visual Arts and Intermedia at the Faculty of Arts, Technical University in Košice (2000–2006), and completed her doctoral studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava (2013–2017). She has received several recognitions: finalist of the 333 Prize at the National Gallery in Prague in 2008 and 2010; Jury Prize at the Scooter II Biennial, Ján Koniarek Gallery in Trnava in 2009; and the Ego Art Prize in Bratislava in 2007. She completed artist residencies at Red Gallery in London and within the K.A.I.R. Košice program in 2013. Her long-term artistic focus involves exploring personal and contemporary social themes exclusively through layering and stitching textile material using both hand and machine embroidery. Her early works consisted of small textile objects and images depicting desolate, depopulated landscapes regenerating after destruction. In contrast, she later created large-format compositions with heavily stitched motifs of the highs and lows of partygoers and nightlife. An important part of her work includes life-size textile sculptures and costume sculptures for performances. Using textiles, she models the last bar drunks as well as black-and-white beings from parallel worlds, installed in darkened rooms with UV lighting. Her recent work reflects on the gray concrete culture of isolated suburban housing developments and includes an intimate series about the loss of an unborn child at any stage of pregnancy and the pain accompanying such loss.
