To the exhibition:
In his exhibition project, Šumichrast partially follows up on the previous cycle of cocooned cats Gatos, but this time he more strongly criticizes the phenomenon of contemporary corporate culture and the burden of the problems of late capitalism. The presence of cats has been replaced by human characters, but the messages of the individual works have clear common starting points. Bad working conditions, poor evaluation, feelings of futility, hopelessness, emptiness, anger, or uselessness are the subjects of this series of works. He will present works on canvas for the first time, but his standard watercolors and airbrush drawings on paper will also appear.
MICHAL ŠUMICHRAST (*1991)
graduated from Bratislava University of Applied Sciences in the field of free graphics with prof. Róbert Jančovič. He lives and works in Bratislava. During his studies, he spent several months in Tokyo at the University of Arts Tokyo (Geidai). In his work, he focuses on topics that are closely related to the state of contemporary society. He likes to criticize and ridicule various social phenomena with a strong anti-fascist undertone. Likewise, in his work, we can observe a critique of capitalism, which is, however, clearly intersectional and touches on, among other things, feminist themes and workers' problems. He uses his own humor and wit, often uses pop culture, historical or subcultural references in his works. In his paintings, he likes to work with text in the form of various slogans and sayings. In addition to freelance work, he also works on comics, illustrations and posters. Despite the fact that he studied graphics, he primarily works in watercolor painting and drawing.
