The exhibition Joy prepared for the Synagogue - Contemporary Art Center presents Jana Kapelová's latest project, in which she focuses with insight, wit, irony, but also seriousness on the possibilities of experiencing feelings of emptiness, various nuances of joy, or striving for a continuous happy life. It examines the common denominators of this experience - the hormonal quartet, dopamine, endorphin, serotonin and oxytocin.
Spectators will have the opportunity to see thirty original glazed ceramic vessels at the exhibition, which will simultaneously be actors in a large-format video projection.
Jana Kapelová (1982, Trnava)
is a visual artist, teacher, curator and cultural activist. In her work, she deals with topics such as work and precarization, free time and self-realisation, the influence of the social and cultural environment, upbringing and education on individuals and society. In her artistic practice, she mainly works with the media of video, installation, and text. She mainly uses the formats of author's research, interview, participation and performativity.
Jana Kapelová studied at the Faculty of Education of the University of Trnava, the Faculty of Fine Arts in Banská Bystrica, the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. She worked as a teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and currently co-leads the Studio of Intermedia at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. She was an active member of the artistic initiatives Twenty years since Velvet didn’t happen (2010 - 2012) and Stojíme pri kultúre (2019). In 2014, she became the winner of the Oskar Čepan Award. She exhibited at several individual and group exhibitions in Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, the Czech Republic, Romania, Germany, Switzerland, USA, Japan, Sweden... Her works are represented in the collections of Slovak galleries.
