Annotation:

There are buildings in the world – beauties (and not only on the Danube) and buildings – ugliness. Some may have been born that way, others were caused to this state by their owners. On the opposite side of the bank, within sight of the T3 – cultural vehicle, there is a memento of such a phenomenon. Filip Bielek's exterior exhibition is dedicated to the controversial reconstruction of the famous Bratislava Hotel Danube from 2018, which was widely publicized years ago and is still unresolved. In the very center of the historical part of Bratislava, in an attractive location overlooking the Danube, the postmodern building with its own character was turned into an insulated gray cube with asymmetrical window frames - an attempt at cheap and tasteless "decoration." After pressure from the preservationists as well as the Old Town district and the municipality, the investor undertook to modify the facade in a form that would correspond to the significance of the location and the building itself. However, the current state of affairs has not changed to this day. The controversial facade is not just an aesthetic problem, but points to a deeper malfunction in our mentality and the setting of the system, in which a wealthy investor can do whatever he wants in public space, while control bodies and conservationists have to limit themselves to only challenges and warnings, followed by dysfunctional and nowhere-leading actions. Bad taste in Bratislava has never really dethroned. The new version of entrepreneurial baroque may have a different face, but a common arrogance. The greatest desire of these developers is for the scarring of public space caused by them to be forgotten, for us to start walking around them reconciled with the status quo. But we do not forget.
