European night of science in the Slovak Design Center: Mirroring / LOMA / Transmodernity

This week, the Slovak Design Center is participating in the international festival European Night of Science with exhibitions in the Design Gallery Satelit. At the same time, SCD enters into professional cooperation with the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Charles University, thereby responding to the inevitable need for interdisciplinary linking of creative and natural science disciplines.

This year, the Slovak Design Center concluded a memorandum of strategic cooperation with the Department of Environmental Ecology and Landscape Management of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Comenius University in Bratislava. SCD thus responds to the growing need for interdisciplinary linking of creative and natural science disciplines, which is a necessary prerequisite for the meaningful work of institutions in the age of permacrisis. Within the design center, the Inolab Research and Development Department deals with research and innovation (R&I).

On the occasion of the two international events of the European Night of Science and the conference from the Humanistic Ecology series, the organizers from both institutions present the Mirroring exhibition with the subtitle Contemporary Environmental Dilemmas: Art x Science x Design.

The exhibition in the Design Gallery Satelit contains three parts.

1. It will present a long-term project of the Slovak Design Center, connecting design and science – the LOMA library of materials, which collects samples of traditional, but above all, experimental materials that designers, fashion designers and architects use in their work.

The head of Inolab, Robert Paršo, explains the purpose of the library of materials: "The library of materials was established in 2019 and cooperates with experts on the development of new materials from a scientific environment. The comprehensive collection allows individual researchers and groups of visitors to get to know different types of new and experimental materials and production technologies, the stories of their origin and the possibilities of application in modern design and the circular economy."

2. The second part, organically connected to the library of materials, is the Mirroring collection - a selection of art projects connecting science and art that work with the themes of the international conference "Contemporary Environmental Dilemmas: Interdisciplinary Approaches."

"According to Donna Haraway, the human being is defined by the relationship between nature and culture. How does this relationship affect the patterns of the shared environment in which human existence is linked to the existence of other species and their human culture? How is this reflected in their cultural presentation? How can culture influence environmentally sustainable human behavior? A transdisciplinary approach to artistic research and creation (art, science and technology) can enrich artistic representation or manifestation, as well as scientific research, with methods by which this mirroring can be perceived. The exhibition shows the interconnectedness of man and more than man in their common space of existence," asks Andrea Gogová, a member of the curatorial team of the Mirroring exhibition, researcher from the Department of Environmental Ecology and Landscape Management

3. The Transmodernity exhibition is currently open in the gallery, which includes several projects connecting art and design. Inolab expert Klára Prešnajderová will draw visitors' attention to their specifics and the importance of a scientific-research approach in creating a design in a guided tour during the European Night of Science.

The guided tour of the exhibition on Friday, September 27 from 5:00 p.m. will be presented by a member of the curatorial team, Mária Beňačková Rišková, who has long been devoted to the relationship between culture, science and technology.

Part of the guided tour will be a screening of the film Danube bound in the country and a discussion with its author and director Andrej Somor (from 6:00 p.m.).
