Curatorial Text
Why look into cameras, Something’s not right with these clouds, The depth of photography, Metaphotography. Portraits of surveillance cameras on various sizes of instant film, printed polaroids of generated images, video encoded in augmented reality on a 100% chemical base. The multi-layered project *METANOIA* by Slovak photographer Ema Lančaričová consists of several carefully developed series that, through experiments with analog photography, explore the current state of the photographic medium.
Artificial intelligence and machine learning are changing our understanding of the photographer as an image-maker. Algorithms influence how we perceive technical images on a daily basis. Billions of photographs stored somewhere in the cloud and, at the same time, the vast scale of data centers distort our ideas about the physical form of photography. The exhibition project by Ema Lančaričová, which is the result of her doctoral studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, poses the question of what photography is today and reminds us why discussions about the transformations of new media are so important.
