The Visual and Cultural Studies Section of the Research Center and the Department of Painting and Other Media of the Academy of Fine Arts organized in cooperation with the Danish Ministry of Culture, the Danish Culture Agency, the Cultural Institute of the Republic of Hungary, the Austrian Cultural Forum and the Slovak National Gallery the International Symposium Painting in the Postmedia Age took place on 30 and 31 May 2012 at the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava.

The symposium is the second continuation of a project created at the Academy of Fine Arts as part of a research task focused on critical reflection on contemporary painting with the support of the grant agency KEGA (project no. 004VŠVU-4/2011) of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport. The symposium follows up on the successful Czech-Slovak project Painting in Contexts, Contexts of Painting, which was organized by the Visual and Cultural Studies Section of the VŠVU Research Center in cooperation with the Czech Center and took place on 21 and 22 October 2010 at the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava. .

The main goal of the Symposium Painting in the Postmedia Age was to create a platform for critical reflection on contemporary painting with a stop to the questions looking for what caused the cyclically recurring ends and returns of painting, as we noticed throughout the 20th century but also at the beginning. new millennium. To what extent can we combine dramatic changes in the reflection of painting with the immanent inner development of art itself, to what extent is it a process influenced by external cultural, technological, or even economic factors? Given that the key topic of the symposium was reflections on new areas of painting in the post-media age, the center received questions related to the role of painting in a world marked by the dominance of electronic media.
