Simona Gottierová is in residency in Paris since January
In 2024, the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava will again send two graduates to Paris for an artist residency. Starting in January, Simona Gottierová, a graduate of painting and jewelry at the AFAD, is the first residenc at the Cité internationale des arts this year. From the last open call, she was selected by the commissions at the AFAD and in Paris based on her work and artistic intention, which she plans to develop in Paris.
Simona Gottierová (1991) graduated from the AFAD with a master's degree in painting (studio led by Klaudia Kosziba, 2018), and a bachelor's degree in the Metal and Jewelry Studio (led by Karol Weisslechner, 2016). She primarily works with objects and her outputs often expand into multimedia installations with performative potential. The core of her artistic practice lies in questioning the possibilities of our perception and experience of ourselves in contact with the world - matter that is all around us. She calls for trust in primal information and its perception even before we begin to articulate and name what we experience. She works with materials carrying the qualities of vibrancy - soft, warm, liquid, changing, thus mirroring one ́s physicality and inner experience. Her reaction to today's phenomena such as technology or disconnection (from our self, body, relationships, environment) brings the potential of closeness, slowness and presence. Although the starting point of her artistic practice is intimate and rooted in the everyday, she believes that it expands and connects with discourse on a social, political or ecological level. She currently lives in a small village in the central part of Slovakia - Špania Dolina.
As part of her residency in Paris, she plans to develop the Caretaker project, which runs from 2021, and connect with the local creative community in the field of performance:
“In my artistic practice the theme of taking care of someone/something has recently emerged as a layer upon the background of my practice. Since 2021 the project has been presented in several exhibitions. Now I look for another place and context to develop my research. During the residency I would like to continue studying the theory and experimenting with the material related to this theme, as well as taking a further step by exploring the performative potential of the project.”

Fifteen AFAD graduates from fields such as painting, performance, textiles and intermedia applied for the fourth open call. The commission at the AFAD (composed of: Marcel Benčík, Naďa Kančevová, Barbora Komarová, Miroslava Urbanová and Lucia G. Stach from the SNG) selected six candidates for the second round. Subsequently, the committee at Cité (Vincent Gonzalvez – Director of the Residency Department, Souraya Kessaria – Program of Residencies and Partnerships) chose Simona Gottierová for the first residency in 2024 and Ľudmila H. Machová for the second one from April to June.
The Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava has established a long-term cooperation with the Cité internationale des arts in Paris, within the framework of which it will send twice a year authors from Slovakia working in the fields of visual arts, design, architecture, restoration and art theory. Those who graduated from the AFAD or are currently studying at a doctoral degree can apply for the residency - regardless of field, field of research or age.
Another open call for art and research residencies in Paris will be announced later this year for another two residencies in 2025. Follow us on our social media and website for updates.
