About the event
The Linen Variations event aims to create partnerships between local growers and artisans in collaboration with young artists. To build a network of local craft workshops and strengthen the social aspect of young sustainable design.
Linen (resp. flax) has accompanied mankind for thousands of years, and since the discovery of the fibers it had to travel a long way so that people could use it for their own good. In the territory of present-day Slovakia, even in the 19th century, almost all traditional clothing, home and household textiles were made from linen cloth of different thickness and quality. As a result of economic development and the import of cheap and high-quality cotton, the production and processing of flax began to disappear. After the collapse of the managed economy, it was not possible to maintain the cultivation or processing of flax fibers on the territory of Slovakia. However, the present time brings a renaissance of natural materials that are friendly not only to their users, but also to the environment. Prioritizing resources that do not harm the environment and can be reused brought flax back into the spotlight.

During the first day, thanks to Zuzana Kovalčíková's lecture, the participants got acquainted with the cultivation and processing of linen. As part of the practical part, they tried out the process of spinning and weaving linen fiber on looms. Textile designer Kamila Zuščáková also presented her perspective on designing and weaving. In the practical part, the participants wove from various combinations of linen with other natural materials and experimented with weaves.
