Humor and caricature in Czechoslovak illustration
Cartoon humor and caricature are creative means that are often marginalized and not in the center of interest of art history. The 60s of the 20th century brought a significant rise of the genre with abundant use in magazines and book illustrations. The lecture will focus on the topic of humor and caricature in the Czechoslovak book and magazine production of the chosen decade and will also present the variable formal features that accompanied cartoon humor: distinctive drawing stylization, fondness for absurdity and nonsense poetics, the motif of collage and photomontage. The presentation accompanied by visual material will focus on the work of selected authors (Bohumil Štěpán, Igor Kostka, Vlastimil Herold, Viktor Kubal and others), as well as the creative group of caricaturists (Polylegran).
