Film: AFAD and Exploring
We present to you another episode of the film series, which we prepared on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of our school in cooperation with the director Soňa Maletz. Through these short films, we want to show you not only the inner workings of the AFAD, but also the topics that interest us in terms of student assignments, in artistic and scientific research, as well as the values that we try to uphold at the school.
AFAD and Exploring
The film AFAD and Exploring presents those study programs at our academy that we could describe as "traditional techniques" - painting, sculpture, printmaking and glass. However, we are an art school that guides students not only to master the craft and basic techniques, but also to push their boundaries, to extend into other media and enrich them with new approaches - to exploring. In this episode, teachers talk about how such experimentation happens, why it is important to build on basic skills within these media, and what role the study of art theory and history plays in this.
"Exploring or experiment is the basis of art academy and education. Because school, whether we like it or not, is a bit of an incubator where we can try something that we can then try in the real world too, but with different risks."
Ján Kralovič (teacher, Theory and history of art)
"This school is the ideal environment for pushing boundaries. We have everything provided here to know how to do traditional techniques, but there is an awareness that calls you to redefine them, to move them forward.''
Andrea Pézman (teacher, Printmaking and other media)
"It is important to master the craft, because it is like a guardrail, on the basis of which you know how to confront yourself and then you know how to move within it. It's a point of certainty, but it doesn't have to be true.'
