The new AFAD resident travels to Paris
At the beginning of the new year, the AFAD sends another resident, Martin Toldy, to a creative residence at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris. The second artist in a row will have the opportunity to spend three months at the international center of residences and work on his art projects.
Martin Toldy graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in the VVV studio (Visual, Verbal, Public) under the guidance of Martin Piaček and Dávid Koronczi in 2019 with a diploma thesis on the topic of Fields and Roles on Our Scene. During his studies at the AFAD, however, several professors with whom he studied (Anna Daučíková, Szabolc KissPál, Nóra Ružičková) took turns at this studio.
Since 2013 he has basically been constantly working in the field of intermedia creation in academia (the longest under the leadership of Nora Ružičková), which is closest to his way of expression through the medium of art. He is primarily interested in the psychology of the relationship between the artist, the viewer, and the space in which their communications meet, as well as the possibilities of "psychologisation" of space as such (in connection with the event, time, perception), as well as aspects of the game, simulation, participatory and interaction.
He is the founder and an active member of the performative group Marína Abramovič Po Sebe Neupratuje (MAPSN)
Martin says about his work:
“I'm interested in creation as a process, reflecting the attitude towards art using the tools of the activist avant-garde and exploring the world by purely artistic means. My personal motivation is to thematize the freedom of the individual creation, but directly depending on the acceptance of the environment, analyzing social relations and interdisciplinary cooperation. I'm not trying to describe or definitively explain what the concept of creative freedom is, but I would like to examine and critically approach artistic projects as if they became part of an experiment exploring the artistic meanings and behavior as well as artistic "inputs" and "outputs", which surround us on a daily basis and which we co-create.
I would like to follow up on current research into the conditions and frameworks that co-create the artistic apparatus, as well as the psychoanalytic background of the outputs of the current visual art. It is about reflecting on the process of artistic dramatization of roles and their creative disability - denying their function. I'm dealing with the examination and deviation of rituals and norms that are inherent in the artistic environment - they structure it and hierarchize it.”

The Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava has established a long-term cooperation with the Cité internationale des arts in Paris, in which we will be able to send to residency Slovak artists, designers, architects or theorists several times a year. Next year, the AFAD will announce two more open calls. We therefore invite all our graduates and doctoral students to follow our website and social networks, where we will publish the current open call in time.
