Statement of the Student Section of the Academic Senate of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava on the 35th Anniversary of the Velvet Revolution

35 years ago, the streets of Slovakia and the Czech Republic were filled with voices yearning for freedom, justice, and democracy. In this pivotal moment, students of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava played an active role. Their voices, art, and actions contributed to shaping history, breaking free from the totalitarian regime, and opening our country to the possibilities of free expression.

We take pride in this tradition of courage, which has become a solid foundation for the creative and critical strength of our institution. We recognize that the freedom fought for at that time is not a given. It must be continually protected, nurtured, and supported. Today, as we face challenges and actions threatening fundamental freedoms—freedom of speech, freedom of creation, the undermining of critical thinking, and the erosion of civic engagement—we hold the courage of our predecessors in even higher regard.

The present times confront us with questions that demand clear stances and decisive actions. Today, it is once again our responsibility to stand for freedom and justice for all, for the willingness to listen and engage in dialogue, for tolerance, and for an open culture. It is crucial for us to be able to express our views—and art remains one of the most powerful tools to do so.

As the student section of the Academic Senate of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, we pledge to carry forward the spirit of the Velvet Revolution. We aim to stand on the side of truth and freedom and to uphold the democratic values of our society.

In this effort, we stand alongside our teachers, who provide us with support and inspiration. Together, as an academic community, we express our gratitude to all who contributed to the fight for freedom, and we accept the baton of this courage. We are ready to be a voice that does not falter. We are ready to be creators of art that will help shape a better future.
