Prof. J. Lacko Award 2024 for a diploma work from AFAD

Congratulations to our recent graduate Soňa Polčová from the Department of Architecture, who won the PRO NOVUS award for her diploma work entitled Sponge City for her innovative, non-traditional approach to problem solving and the level of expressive and artistic values of the architectural design.

The diploma work was created in Studio of Architexture: body and space under the supervision of Danica Pišteková and Tomáš Tholt.

“The diploma thesis focuses on the investigation of the potential of implementing biomaterial structures in the urban environment, with the aim of reducing the heat island effect. Cities often experience temperatures several degrees higher than their surroundings due to a variety of factors, including insufficient rainwater retention and the use of impermeable materials that heat up quickly. The concept of the sponge city responds to these problems. The idea of the project consists in the perception of biological materials as complex systems that are capable of retaining, absorbing and gradually evaporating rainwater in densely built-up urban areas."
