Fulbright Specialist Alexey Yurenev from New York Comes to AFAD
In October and November 2026, the Department of Photography and New Media at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava will welcome US-based visual artist, researcher and educator Alexey Yurenev as a Fulbright Specialist.
During his residency, Yurenev will lead Model Zoo, an eight-week Visual Research Lab examining artificial intelligence through the space and relationships of the Bratislava Zoo—a site where living beings are bred, classified, controlled and displayed according to conditions they do not determine themselves. Students will combine field research, theoretical reading and discussion with the development of individual artistic projects. They may work with photography, video, diagrams, archives, models, installation and other visual and research-based methods.
The workshop will begin on 13 October, with its main programme continuing until 19 November 2026. It is designed for selected BA and MA students from the Department of Photography and New Media and will be conducted entirely in English.
Alexey Yurenev
Alexey Yurenev is a visual artist, researcher and educator from New York, USA, whose work explores the intersections of memory, technology and the production of knowledge. He teaches at Columbia University and the International Center of Photography in New York. His work has been exhibited internationally at venues including FOAM in Amsterdam, Palazzo Poggi in Bologna, Hangar in Brussels, MOMus Modern in Thessaloniki and Rencontres d’Arles. He is the author of Seeing Against Seeing(Nooscope, 2025).
Yurenev’s projects have been featured in The New York Times, National Geographic, Virginia Quarterly Review and Harper’s. His work and publications are held in collections and libraries including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, FOAM Museum and the Anti-Krieg Museum. In 2026, he received a Fulbright Specialist Award in education for a project developed in collaboration with the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava.
