Film: AFAD and Polis
We present to you another episode of the film series, which we prepared on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of our school in cooperation with the director Soňa Maletz. Through these short films, we want to show you not only the inner workings of the AFAD, but also the topics that interest us in terms of student assignments, in artistic and scientific research, as well as the values that we try to uphold at the school.
AFAD and Polis
This week we commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, which both in Slovakia and the Czech Republic is a symbol of the fight for freedom and civil resistance against the totalitarian regime. Currently, we again feel the necessity to publicly stand up for our civil rights, for institutions and against the arbitrary decisions of the government. Not only thinking about public space and our voice in it, but also active participation in political events and developing civic responsibility are natural to us – the academic community of the AFAD. What does polis mean to them, engagement in art and society, or political art, our colleagues and students say in another film called AFAD and Polis.
„It is important to understand that freedom isn’t something we can take for granted, that will be here forever, but it’s privilege we need to be prepared to defend if we want to have it.“
Celestína Minichová (graduate, Intermedia)
„Social activism at an art school is inherent to the very nature of artistic activity which requies free environment. In such a space, students can express themselves with absolute freedom.“
Michal Tornyai (teacher, Visual Communication)
„I believe that art is inherently political. I always tell my students that as soon as they step out of their studio and engage in public discourse, their art becomes political.“
Daniel Grúň (teacher, Theory and History of Art)
