Film: AFAD and Ecology
We present to you another episode of the film series, which we prepared on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of our school in cooperation with the director Soňa Maletz. Through these short films, we want to show you not only the inner workings of the AFAD, but also the topics that interest us in terms of student assignments, in artistic and scientific research, as well as the values that we try to uphold at the school.
AFAD and Ecology
One of the greatest challenges of our time is the ongoing ecological crisis, which globally affects not only all levels of society, but also non-human species. As part of our teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, we focus on reflecting on this problem not only in the form of assignments or optional subjects, but also the students themselves process it in their art and design projects. In another short film about our school, you will learn how we think about the environmental crisis within the framework of various types of creation and research as a school - an educational institution and a community of people.
„When I think of ecology, I envision a well-designed system. It’s not just about using eco-friendly materials or saving energy. These are just some of the ways to address the problem, but they won’t have much impact unless the system itself is designed with the understanding that we are an integral part of nature, part of a larger whole.“
Sylvia Jokelová (teacher, Design)
„I think that students at art schools are able to think about these issues in a different, perhaps much more inspiring way. They ask far more questions. They may not know the answers but they can evoke in society a different way of thinking about the environment in which we live.“
Stanislav Stankoci (teacher and vice-rector, Visual communication)
„Art brings what other forms of art might not. Through imagination and creativity, it opens up new possibilities. Of course, it often becomes the task for others, sucha as engineers, natural scientists, or for laboratories to test these outlined paths. So, I believe that truly ecological approach involves significant collaboration between different fields and forms of knowledge.“
