New Interfaces 05/Gabriela Kisová – DOM-OV-INA. The Phenomenon of Home Between Intimacy and Ideology

A visual essay on a theme that, like the body and identity, is closest to us. The motif of home is a well-established concept in contemporary art, yet one with fluid boundaries. Home is and is not a private space; politics permeates it, and it reflects larger entities such as a nation or a state. Selected works by artists from Slovakia and abroad open doors and windows for us onto exciting spaces where stability is often nothing more than a fantasy.

In her curatorial and publishing work, Gabriela Kisová has repeatedly explored, from the perspective of art history and the social sciences, phenomena in the visual arts such as artists’ studios, institutional operations, and the theme of home. In 2011, together with Ivana Komanická, she organized the exhibition Home Edition for the Central Slovakian Gallery in Banská Bystrica (which was reprised that same year at the East Slovak Gallery in Košice). She taught at the Faculty of Arts at the Technical University of Košice and at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. From September 2023 to April 2025, she managed curatorial activities at the Slovak National Gallery. She currently heads the programme and project activities department at the Bratislava City Gallery.

The fifth edition of the “New Interfaces” lecture series focuses on the themes of home and the house—in a time of armed conflicts, when many people have lost their homes and are searching for new ones. What is “home,” and in what spaces does its function—associated with safety and acceptance—manifest itself? What becomes of “home” when there is no longer any life within it? What does “home” mean for artists and cultural workers who migrate for work, participate in residencies abroad, and, conversely, establish cultural centers in their hometowns? What were they like, and what became of the legendary buildings in Slovak towns and villages from the socialist era—the houses of culture? The lectures in the series “New Interfaces 05” also reflect the thematic thread of the Medium Gallery’s 2026 exhibition program, which centers on the search for and discovery of home and its fragments.
