Annotation

DOMOVY/HOMES poses a question of fundamental importance to our generation: what has happened to the idea of “home” for those coming of age in a world marked by uncertainty, danger and precarity? This “unholy trinity” shapes what sociologist Zygmunt Bauman called “liquid modernity”. In it, structures once considered solid – such as identity, community and home itself – become fluid and subject to constant change. In this context, home is no longer a fixed place, but an unstable emotional and political construct shaped by personal experience and social conditions within the contemporary situation.

The exhibition brings together artist Trin Alt (b. 2002) and artist Ester Gašparová (b. 2001), both of whom explore fundamental questions of belonging. In his installations, Alt uses objects from everyday life which, both personal and critical of late capitalism, open up a space for reflecting on the disintegration of the ideal of home. Gašparová selects specific elements from current political reality that undermine the possibility of a dignified life, subsequently transforming them into an impetus for participation in and reflection on contemporary social developments.

As a whole, the exhibition points to the close interconnectedness of the intimate and the political, presenting home as a constantly shifting condition that shapes contemporary ideas of belonging. The installation offers a view of home as a fragmented “puzzle” – moving from the singular to the diverse – that connects the world through mutual relationships.

Trin Alt

Trin Alt (b. 2002, Maribor) is an interdisciplinary artist working in drawing and painting, often adapting his works to specific spaces. In his practice, Alt analyses everyday objects and the extent to which they both shape and challenge our identity and gender. Under late capitalism, ownership of particular objects directly reflects class and status. Alt questions consumerism by assigning importance to objects that are often overlooked. In his most recent works, these include cutlery, a screw or a button. By bringing them to the foreground, he turns them into symbols of everyday life.

Working with used objects such as duvets, motorcycle helmets or discarded cardboard boxes, Alt reclaims other people’s belongings. In the process of creating collages from his own patterns and images on second-hand objects, the intimate object becomes public – as in the series of duvets bearing visible traces of the bodies of their previous owners.

He currently lives and works in Vienna. He is a recipient of a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture of Slovenia.

Ester Gašparová

Ester Gašparová (b. 2001, Banská Štiavnica) is a visual artist working primarily in sculpture and installation. Her practice investigates political symbolism, folklore, ritual practices and post-socialist histories. Through ceramics, concrete, steel and industrial materials, she reflects on the relationship between material fragility and monumentality. She examines the ways in which ideological forms are preserved, transformed or gradually emptied of their original meaning. She views historical references as unstable residues through which she reveals the persistence of power, faith and collective memory.

Using fragmentary structures and symbolic forms, she reflects on how political and cultural narratives continue to shape contemporary identities and a sense of belonging. Her installations often create tension between durability and disintegration, highlighting the instability concealed within collective histories and social systems.

She currently lives and works in Vienna.
