Annotation

“The act of survival is a beautiful journey,” our cowboy warns us in the beginning, they continue: “You start role playing as a way to cope, until the boundaries are not entirely visible anymore.”

The solo exhibition of Ezra Šimek, titled We are what we are, but it is not evil, follows a journey of two protagonists, a witch and a cowboy on their way to autonomy, acceptance and love. Ezra revisits historically dissident paths and proposes tools such as role-play, journaling and escapism while channeling ancestral knowledge, creating new pathways for a contemporary trans vagabond.

Ezra Šimek (*1997)

received their BA in Photography (Studio of New Aesthetic) from Prague’s Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts and their MA in contemporary art theory and practice at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, Slovakia. They are currently doing their MA in TransArts at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and diploma studies at the Digital Media and Moving Image Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In their work, Šimek primarily deals with queer identities and linguistic sensitivity, presented through various time-based media (film, performative lecture, computer game) or site-responsive installations, sound works and writing. They explore gender as a societal construct comparable to mythology, fostering synergy among many subjectivities in order to create a new inclusive and speculative reality.

Their work has been presented at the Czech Center in New York (2023), Gianni Manhattan, Vienna (2023), the National Gallery in Prague (2022), Prague City Gallery (2022), the Museum for Contemporary Art Zagreb (2022), Světova 1, Prague (2022) and VUNU Gallery, Košice (2022), among others. They are the holder of the Jindřich Chalupecký Art Award 2022.
