Studio S + M + L_XL – METAL AND JEWEL at the AFAD in Bratislava has undergone a dynamic development in the 31 years of its existence. Its establishment was initiated in 1991 by doc. Anton Cepka, an iconic figure in world jewellery. Since 1995, the studio has been run by the architect and jeweller prof. Karol Weisslechner, acad. arch. Together with their assistants Matúš Cepka, Alžbeta K. Majerníková and later Kristýna Španihelová, they accompany students on their journey within their studies and searching for their own expressive repertoire.
Contemporary jewellery is primarily perceived as an autonomous art medium with a direct impact on the viewer / wearer, but at the same time thematically connected with events in other (not only) artistic spheres. That is why the study is based on the information in the field of visual arts, architecture, film, fashion and design. Studio S + M + L_XL – METAL AND JEWEL provides teaching in a wide range of activities, from jewellery artefacts through the design of industrially usable objects to large-scale work in architectural spaces. The studies are focused on developing a conceptual approach to creation not only in the intentions of the author's jewellery, understood in the context of a certain form of reflection and participation in human communication. The aim of teaching is to develop students' intellect in connection with quality craftsmanship, but also the implementation of new technologies. Emphasis is placed on mastering craft techniques, perceived as a legacy with a cultural background of residual references or traces, which can trigger subconscious feelings of understanding. Many materials can be found in students' works, but working with metal remains paramount. The perception of the human body at various levels and the interaction or influence of the body and man also play an important role.
On the map of European schools with academic teaching of jewellery, the Bratislava studio is one of the youngest, however, graduates of the studio are successfully entering the European jewellery scene with their own projects. In addition to presentation activities at world forums (Munich Jewellery Week, Sieraad Art Fair Amsterdam), there are many individual successes at well-known events (Schmuck / Munich, JOYA Barcelona Art Fair, Legnica Jewellery Festival, Marzee Graduate Prize / Nijmegen). An important regular event in the dramaturgy of graduates and students of the Studio S + M + L_XL – METAL AND JEWEL is the biennial ŠperkStret conference in Bratislava, reflecting the current topic of designer jewellery in the context of an international forum.
