stARTup – Experimental Design Studio
The students of the Experimental Design Studio at the AFAD in Bratislava, led by Sylvia Jokelová and Marián Laššák, have the task of thinking about their future within the STARTUP project.

Zoya Gallery, Ventúrska 269/1, Bratislava
The Experimental Design Studio led by Sylvia Jokelová and Marián Laššák is one of the youngest studios at the AFAD in Bratislava. It was founded in the fall of 2019 and has had its first academic year. Through its concept, it advocates a discussion about the need to change the paradigm and reconsider the seemingly unchanging positions of design in a world that is slowly moving into the intangible digital space against the background of the looming climate crisis. It creates space for a critical attitude towards the field of study, as well as the perception of a broader social, cultural, political, social or ecological context. The ideological framework of assignments ranges from basic concepts such as material, technology, form, function, through the dealing with the relationship between object and user, object and environment to the role of design in society.
stARTup
The situation around the concept of start-up is currently relatively confusing. In many projects, invention is mistaken for attractiveness and social benefits are minimized in favor of economic gain. The challenge for the designer is to redefine its essence in terms of finding new approaches and innovative solutions, but also in the intentions of the current discussion about the role of the designer in society and a responsible approach to the solutions it brings. The students of the Experimental Design Studio at the AFAD in Bratislava, led by Sylvia Jokelová and Marián Laššák, have the task of thinking about their future within the STARTUP project. The project enables the transformation of the studio theme into a real project, which has the potential to become a start-up with quality content and at the same time, with its time range smoothly distributed throughout the study, gives sufficient space for serious research and achieved outputs. It enables the systematic building of one's own design program, brand, as well as cooperation with other experts who enter the process of creating a product, product line or service. At BADW 2021, students present the first results of their projects at various stages of development and suggest possible further direction of their individual area of interest.
