Glass Christmas ornaments by Czech and Slovak designers in Jablonec
The Museum of Glass and Jewellery in Jablonec nad Nisou manages the world's largest public collection of glass Christmas ornaments, totaling 15,000 objects. You can view them in the permanent exhibition World of Wonders. A novelty this year is the presentation of selected glass ornaments from the very first International Symposium of Glass Christmas Ornaments. Three Czech and Slovak design studios were chosen, showcasing their glass Christmas ornaments created specifically for the symposium.

"From a municipal museum with exhibitions focused on regional history, glassmaking, and jewelry, first opened to the public in 1904, our museum transformed in the 1960s into a specialized institution. Since 2003, due to the uniqueness of its focus and the quality of its collections, it has been administered by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic. Starting April 24, 2024, we are showcasing the results of the 1st International Symposium of Glass Christmas Ornaments in the permanent exhibition World of Wonders. This symposium, organized by the museum as part of the International Triennial of Glass and Jewellery Jablonec 2023, aimed to connect glass designers with Christmas ornament manufacturers and give them an opportunity to experiment together," the museum explains about the exhibition.
"In the inaugural year, we invited design duos Dechem, Illola, and Llev, along with the companies Glassor, Irisa, and Rautis. The results exceeded our expectations, as did the enthusiasm with which all participants engaged in the project," said the symposium curator Dagmar Havlíčková, adding that the unique pieces created will enrich the World of Wonders exhibition. "The ornaments from the symposium will also be presented abroad this year, in collaboration with the Czech General Consulate in Hong Kong," added the museum's chief curator, Petr Nový.
This delightful enhancement of an already extensive collection with contemporary ornaments, which are also unique pieces, is a significant attraction not only during the Christmas season. The entire Museum of Glass and Jewellery in Jablonec nad Nisou showcases the craftsmanship of Czech designers, design studios, as well as manufacturers and technologists. The rich offerings of one of the best museums of its kind are a testament to the quality of Czech glassmaking and, fortunately, to the continuation of creators in this field.
