About the exhibition
Slovak photographer Dominika Jackuliaková has long explored the memory of the landscape, its transformations and mobility. In her project R2, she documents the construction of the last missing section of the highway near her hometown of Lučenec in southern Slovakia.
Modern infrastructure shortens time and distance, replacing walking as a way of experiencing the landscape. The artist views the concrete structure through both aesthetic and anthropological lenses: the highway is a route home and a confrontation with her roots. She also sees a sociological vacuum in this space, where the isolation of former village life persists, though it is no longer politically imposed.
Here, the highway becomes a “non-place” shaped by the tension between transit and memory. Through black-and-white photographs, the project reveals changes in the landscape’s visual character, the effects of human activity and a vanishing local identity.
