Annotation
12 glass artists, 6 countries, 4 Czech glassworks, and 1 UNESCO listing. This was the essence of the international glass symposium entitled CONNECTED BY HANDS AND HEARTS, organized by the Museum of Glass and Jewellery in Jablonec nad Nisou, building on the joint inscription of handcrafted glass production on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO (2023).
The Museum of Glass and Jewellery in Jablonec nad Nisou brought together twelve glassmakers from six countries, including four glassworks from northern Bohemia. Participants experienced a two-day creative symposium, excursions to glass schools and workshops, a seminar, exhibition at Sýpka Lemberk, and collaborative work at a mobile furnace in Kristiánov during the Glass Festival. The event, held from September 2 to 7, 2024, was supported by UNESCO’s international headquarters in Paris. The entire project was funded by the National Recovery Plan, Mobility Program III. The exhibition, which was also an official part of the XV International Glass Symposium in Nový Bor (IGS), ran from September 6 to October 6.
The goals of the joint inscription of handcrafted glass production on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity include deepening knowledge about the tradition and modern state of glassmaking crafts and promoting them to the public. Another aim is the mutual exchange of experiences among glassmakers from all six countries – in one word, collaboration. The artists were selected in cooperation with international colleagues. The exhibition concept presents not only works from the symposium but also examples of the typical creations of individual artists. The unified theme of the creative gathering was hot glass blowing and decorating directly at the furnace, a technique popular and widespread in all six countries.
