Studio of Interior design - mapping and relations with Slovak furniture manufacturers and products in Slovakia

The main purpose of the project is to connect the activities of the Interior Design Studio at the VŠVU in Bratislava with real practice. This will be done in several ways. The basic premise is to establish contacts with Slovak companies engaged in the production of furniture with their own design program and to seek opportunities for mutual cooperation between the academic environment and real practice. In parallel, research work will be carried out in order to map the development of the furniture industry and furniture design in Slovakia after 1989.

The interior design studio was established in September 2018. It is therefore the youngest study program at the VŠVU in Bratislava. Its content and concept of teaching is focused on educating future designers in the field of furniture and interior with an emphasis on strengthening the ranks of professionals who will be able to apply themselves primarily in the domestic corporate environment. One of the basic prerequisites for their successful application is the acquisition of practical skills and contacts with real manufacturers already during their studies. It is necessary to adapt the technological and material background of the studio and teaching aimed at mastering skills in the context of current production methods in this area.

During the implementation of the project, a series of lectures and workshops led by experts from practice, research activities focused on mapping the development of the furniture industry in Slovakia after 1989, which will result in a publication, as well as presentation of the educational process in the Interior Design Studio. The outputs of the project will also include a colloquium with invited experts in the field of furniture production, furniture design, design theory, teachers, etc. The main topic will be a reflection on the design and production of furniture in Slovakia from different perspectives, the formulation of problems and the search for possible scenarios for future development.

Establishing cooperation between the academic environment and practice proves to be enriching for both parties. Practical experience in the environment of the furniture industry is an invaluable contribution to building the profile of successful graduates, on the other hand, the academic environment is able to bring new impulses to the design and production of furniture in Slovakia.
