Olivia Vane – Data visualisation at The Economist

Digital Arts AFAD and Slovak Design Center invite you to a lecture

SATELIT Design Gallery, Kollárovo nám. 10, Bratislava

Free entrance. Registration recommended.

Olivia joined The Economist’s Data Journalism team as an interactive journalist in 2021. This talk is a behind-the-scenes look at making data visualisations at The Economist—projects ranging across election data, popular culture, and politics and economics. Olivia will shed light on how these projects move from prototypes to publishing the final version, and reflect on how the journalism environment shapes design work.

About the speaker:

Olivia Vane is a data visualisation designer and front-end engineer based in London. She builds interactives at The Economist. She is also an Ambassador at Observable. Much of her work has been creating visualisations of large cultural datasets, for example digitised collections of paintings, photographs, artefacts, maps, and newspapers. She was a Research Software Engineer at the British Library and The Alan Turing Institute on the ‘Living with Machines' research project. Before this, she did a PhD—'Timeline Design for Visualising Cultural Heritage Data'—at the Royal College of Art. She has created visualisations for institutions including the V&A Museum, the Wellcome Library and the Nordic Museum, Stockholm. She was a Smithsonian Fellow at the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum in 2017.
