Oleg Gryshchenko and Olena Staranchuk: Printmaking and Illustration Workshop at AFAD

We cordially invite you to a lecture on Ukrainian illustration by our colleagues from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv, Oleg Gryshchenko and Olena Staranchuk. We also invite AFAD students to participate in a zine-making workshop.

Ukrainian illustration between contemporary and heritage

Oleg Gryshchenko and Olena Staranchuk will give a presentation on Ukrainian illustration. They will discuss contemporary illustration and their experience working with the graphic heritage of the 20th century, including how to present it in international exhibition projects and how students at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv engage with it.

*The workshop is intended for 8–12 participants.

Oleg Gryshchenko and Olena Staranchuk will also lead an illustration workshop where students will develop their own thematic works to be included in a collaborative zine (self publishing). The main idea of ​​the workshop is to make a joint zine with students, which can then be printed using Risography.

  • The first day, an illustration will be developed for a separate page for a joint self-published zine.
  • The second day, a workshop on making a layout for a joint self-published book, we will talk about the practice of collective work on a book which can be presented at exhibitions and festivals of zines and art books.

Oleg Gryshchenko

Oleg Gryshchenko is a lecturer at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv, leading projects in illustration and book design, and is a researcher in the field of artist books in Ukraine. He is the curator of international illustration exhibitions presented at major events and festivals such as the Frankfurt Book Fair (Germany), Book Arsenal (Ukraine), and the Bologna Children’s Book Fair (Italy).

Olena Staranchuk

Olena Staranchuk is a lecturer at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv and leads projects in typography and book design. She is the curator of international illustration exhibitions presented at major events and festivals such as the Frankfurt Book Fair (Germany), Book Arsenal (Ukraine), and the Bologna Children’s Book Fair (Italy).
