Annotation
The exhibition Another Dimension / Different Scale presents a selection of works by Rasťo Sedlačík from continuously developed painting series created since 2022. Through a unified installation in the spaces of White & Weiss Gallery, works of different scales – from smaller paintings to expanded painting-object formats – come together as a single whole that emphasizes the artist’s long-term thematic focus.
In his work, Sedlačík systematically reflects on situations, events, and scenes of the urban landscape. Urbanity appears here not only as a geographical environment, but also as a dynamic experience transformed into visual records, fragments, and pictorial constructions. The diversity of scale and the formal variability of the works create a space for observing how the language of painting can expand, gain volume, and extend beyond its own medium.
The Expanded Reunion platform – the long-term collaboration of Sedlačík / Benčík / Lacko active since 2015 – develops a specific approach to the “gallery canvas” with each project. Installations emerge as reactions to a particular space, the parameters of the works, and the possibilities of creating an environment that not only presents painting, but also expands it into space.
This expanded position of Sedlačík’s work allows for fluid manipulation of the pieces, which in many cases transcend the traditional two-dimensional boundaries of painting. The synergic collaboration of the authors thus generates a whole that is always newly formed depending on the place and context of a particular realization.
Rastislav Sedlačík (1980) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, where he completed his doctoral studies in 2011. His practice, grounded in painting, moves into an expanded field: paintings appear in the position of objects, and performative and time-based elements enter them. At the same time, he presents them through more complex models such as installation or presentation environment. The central motif of the works is the nuances of the urban landscape, housing estates, as well as the interweaving of the urban environment with the natural landscape in so-called peripheries, while also representing the mutual relationship between architecture and painting. The artist is represented in important gallery and private collections at home and abroad, such as the Linea Collection, the Dobňák Collection, the Slovak National Gallery, CSW Toruń, Poland, and others. He teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava in the Department of Painting, and since 2021 he has led Studio 3EAM / Third Expanded Painting Studio.
