Ján Kralovič: Paper Universe
The Sci-Fi Fanzine and Its Visual Design
Drotárska cesta 44, Bratislava
Bufet Meeting Room (cafeteria space on the 1st floor)
In the 1980s, numerous amateur sci-fi clubs operated across Czechoslovakia, publishing their own magazines—often featuring original covers, typography, and illustrations in individual issues or occasional anthologies.
This lecture, composed of both visual and physical examples of Czech and Slovak sci-fi zines, will focus primarily on their visual aspects. The core of the presentation will explore the environment of the Bratislava fandom and the magazines published there during the 1980s and early 1990s.
The aim is to shed light on both anonymous and known creators and artists within the fandom who contributed to the visual identity of these publications.
The lecture is the result of a scholarship supported by the Bratislava City Foundation.
