Position of AFAD on the Suspension of Emergency Electricity Supplies to Ukraine

22.2.2026

We are deeply concerned by the actions of Prime Minister Robert Fico, who is threatening Ukraine with the suspension of emergency electricity supplies. We consider this to be reckless, inhumane, and vindictive behavior with which Slovak society cannot identify.

The Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava (AFAD) is an institution that closely cooperates with academies in Lviv, Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Uzhhorod. Children, students, and young people at schools across Ukraine face constant interruptions to their education due to Russian air attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure. Limited electricity supplies prevent full-scale education, resulting in frequent cancellations of classes and their rescheduling to late evening hours or weekends. Educating young people during wartime is essential for the future of Ukraine.

We therefore call on the state-owned company SEPS, a.s., to reject the Prime Minister’s request to halt emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine.
