Martin Štefánik: Kinetic Composition
We warmly invite you to a concert of kinetic sound objects and post-digital compositions.
Štúdio 12, Jakubovo námestie 12, Bratislava
The Kinetic Composition project presents a series of live performances in which music is born through direct contact with movement, material, and space. The compositions by Martin Štefánik emerge through kinetic sound objects—hand-built instruments situated at the intersection of sculpture, machine, and musical instrument. Controlled by digital microcontrollers, stepper motors, and electromagnetic resonators, these objects become active co-performers alongside the composer.
The concert is part of the author’s long-term research conducted within his doctoral studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava (AFAD), MediaLab Studio (Post-digital musical instruments in performative environments). The research focuses on transformations of the concept of the musical instrument in the era of post-digitality—when sound arises from the physical interaction of material, space, and algorithm.
The audience enters an environment where the boundaries between performer, instrument, and listener dissolve. Everything that moves also sounds; everything that sounds is set in motion. Music does not emerge in front of the listener, but around them—in a network of physical, acoustic, and visual events.
Kinetic Composition is both an experimental laboratory and a poetic gesture—a return of music to materiality, movement, and shared space at a time when most sounds exist only on screens.
