“Fashion Expression as Relational Form” explores how fashion can become a medium for building social relationships and communication beyond the ideas of design and consumption.
The lecture introduces examples such as Self-Select, an art project based on exchanging clothes with others, to illustrate how fashion can reveal social connections and personal narratives.
In the workshop, students will be invited to develop and test their own creative ideas for “relational fashion” — projects or actions that use clothing as a way to connect people, question social norms, or create shared experiences in public space.
Through group ideation, fieldwork, and reflection, participants will learn to see fashion not only as appearance, but as a living practice of empathy, dialogue, and participation.
Yoshinari Nishio (1982, Japan) is an artist, fashion designer and Associate Professor in Tokyo University of the Arts.
