Á la Belle Vue de l’Abattoir

To celebrate 20 years of working on the site of the former municipal slaughterhouse in Mons, BeCraft is presenting a large-scale European group exhibition at the Grande Halle des Anciens Abattoirs. The exhibition brings together around sixty artists from twelve European countries and reflects on the theme of “Abattoirs” (slaughterhouses) through contemporary approaches to craft and design.

BeCraft, 17–02 rue de la Trouille, 7000 Mons, Belgium

The authors approach the topic in various ways – from critical commentary and social reflection to memory, poetics and analytical exploration. The exhibited works invite visitors to take a sensitive and informed look at these transitional places – spaces of transition, abandonment, production and transformation, which today become part of cultural heritage.

The exhibition also opens up a space for reflection on what former slaughterhouses reveal to us about our societies: about our relationship to living beings, to production gestures, to the traces that remain and to what disappears.

The dialogue between artworks, archival documents and personal stories creates a powerful immersive experience around a topic that is rarely explored in the field of artistic craft. The exhibition is also a tribute to craft as a way of thinking about the world.
